Biography
Sunci's work always begins with a organized performance or moving herself to new locations and contexts, where she uses panting as a tool to document her performances and dislocation to the new context. Suncica always paints form life and the paintings are a shapshot -visual document of a moment in time, the people, and the place.
Suncicas first painting-show/performance was in Paris 2004. After graduation she had a solo show in the AKA Gallery in Rome. Since she has participated in a number of group shows internationally such as the Detour moleskine at the Pompidou Museum in Paris, Detour at the Art Directors Club, New York, ?Faccia Lei? during the 2007 Venice biennale, ?How To? during the 2009 Istambul biennale.
She also had several solos shows. Arcaute Contemporaneo gallery Mexico, Diocletian's Palace Split, Croatia, Croatian embassy gallery London, Salerno, Italy. Sunci compleatd an art ressidney on Palmizana-
Robinson Crusoe type island in the Adriatic, curated a studio program for young Croatian artists in Split in 2008-9 and launched a magazine called37 before returning to London to encroach a new per formative project called Dinner with Sunci.
Dinner with Sunci, is a performance-painting project.
I cook a dinner for individuals in the arts whose projects I like.
After dinner I paint a portrait of the person. Trough the dinners , I get to know , and relax the individuals enough to paint them relaxed and comfortable.
Painting the portrait I bring to attention, and make into art, people who spend their lives making and organizing art, but are most of the time in the background of art works. The project is like the portrait gallery, except fresh, relative now, it frames and merits people who are making art, and those who are organizing, nurturing it in this city at this moment. Collecting the portraits I am creating a visual document , making an anthropological picture of the specific group of people in London at this moment in time. The series of portraits will in the future be a valuable document and exhibited when compleat enough.
Anyone who thinks they should be and would like to be included in the collection I welcome to propose themselves.
Next Project:
One Dance
The day before the private view of the Frieze Art Fair, next to Regents Park the doors of the beautiful 18th Century house 33 Portland Place will open for a one-off performance by Suncica Perisin Tomljanovic.
Dance, paint and music, 12hrs non-stop.
The workspace will adorn one long large piece of paper, positioned on the walls, and stretching the entire length of the room - filling the space.
Two turntables and a PA system will provide the music by two DJs set to mix to the volume and tempo of the crowd, placing the work in context with the music.
For the duration of 12 hours,'Sunci' will be documenting the evolution of the music using painting, where the music changes will affect the aplication of paint, colour and style, whilst she paints from life the guests who come to the performance.
The opening of the performance is at 12pm, the installation will continue for 12 hours .
Meter by meter extracts of the large painting created during the performance will be auctioned, by Artemis Gallery as a closure of the performance.
ONE DANCE is a collaborated project by Suncica P.T. and Artemis Gallery
